Tips for Being a Successful Podcast Guest

In our last post, we talked about why starting your own podcast can be a great way to boost your platform for promoting your book (and yourself as a thought leader in your field). In this post, we want to share tips for being on other people’s podcasts—and how you can leverage these opportunities to your advantage.

In the past few years, podcast interviews have become an essential tool for promoting books and connecting with potential readers/audiences. But how do you find them—and get yourself invited onto them?

Getting an Invitation
Many times social media is the best place to find potential podcasts. Here, you can follow and engage with podcast hosts and their shows. You can engage with them by sharing their episodes, leaving thoughtful comments, and contributing to discussions related to your book's topic. By building genuine relationships and demonstrating your knowledge, you increase the likelihood of being noticed and considered for guest appearances.

Also, there are numerous online directories and resources dedicated to connecting podcasters with potential guests. Websites like PodcastGuests.com, MatchMaker.fm, and InterviewConnections.com allow you to create a profile showcasing your expertise and book, making it easier for podcast hosts to find and invite you to their shows.

You’ll want to develop a concise and persuasive pitch you can share with them that highlights your expertise, unique perspective, and the value you can bring to the podcast's audience. Your pitch should include a brief introduction, a summary of your book, and a few key talking points that would make for an engaging interview. Personalize each pitch to demonstrate your familiarity with the podcast and explain why you'd be an ideal guest.

When the Invitation Comes
When you do receive an invitation, you’ll want to prepare well for your interview. Before appearing on any podcast, take the time to research the show and its target audience. Listen to a few episodes to understand the tone, style, and format of the podcast. This will help you tailor your message and ensure that your interview resonates with the listeners. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the host and their interviewing approach. This will enable you to establish a rapport and engage in a more natural conversation.

Ahead of time, prepare a list of key talking points. While it's essential to be flexible during the interview, having a list of key talking points will help you stay focused and ensure that you cover the most important aspects of your book. Consider the main themes, unique selling points, and any interesting anecdotes or experiences related to your writing process, or the experiences that contributed to your writing the book.

Don’t be afraid to practice the interview in advance. Rehearsing your responses to potential questions will boost your confidence and help you deliver your answers more effectively. You can ask a friend or family member to conduct a mock interview or practice on your own by recording yourself and playing it back to identify areas for improvement.

Finally, provide a well-crafted author bio and book synopsis. If you don’t already have a Media Kit prepared, consider putting one together. (This is a service Inspira offers, so if you need one, please reach out for a quote.) This will help the host introduce you and your work effectively, setting the stage for a successful interview. Make sure your media kit highlights your expertise, achievements, and any relevant personal experiences that shaped your writing.

During the Interview
Be yourself. Most importantly, be authentic and engaging, as this will help your listeners connect personally with you. Share personal stories and experiences, and don't be afraid to show your sense of humor or vulnerability. Remember, the goal is to create a genuine connection with the audience and leave a lasting impression.

Mention your book several times and be sure to share how people can buy it. You don’t have to talk it up the whole time, but don’t be afraid to point out that, to hear more, they’ll want to read the book. That will whet their appetite to go looking for it after the podcast.

After the Podcast Airs
Once the podcast episode featuring your interview is live, be sure to promote it through your own channels. Share the episode on your social media platforms, website, and email newsletter. Encourage your followers to listen, share, and leave reviews. This not only helps the podcast reach a wider audience but also demonstrates your appreciation for the opportunity to be a guest on the show.

Most of all, have fun! The more you appear to be enjoying yourself, the more of a connection your audience will feel for you. By following these guidelines, you'll be well-equipped to make the most of being a podcast guest.

Happy podcasting!
