Concept Coaching

$750.00

What you will come away with:

  • An overall thesis for your book

  • A clearly-defined targeted reader and a strong benefit for that reader

  • A workable structure and chapter outline

  • A sample chapter that contains all key chapter elements (intro, thesis, cohesive sub-sections, transitions, conclusion) that you will use for a template to write the other chapters

 Process:

Prep work: Answer some thought questions that will surface the type of people you are talking to (your readers)

Step 1: Coaching Conversation: Reader and benefit (45 to 60 minutes)

Discover and create a detailed profile of the specific primary and secondary reader, and what you want to do for that reader (i.e., the book’s value statement). This profile needs to resonate strongly with you, as this will shape the book’s format, the editing target, the book’s title, the marketing plan, etc.

Your Homework: Based on our conversation and any follow-up thinking necessary:
Write two reader profiles — primary and secondary reader
Write a thesis statement for the book
Summarize in a value statement

Homework evaluation and follow-up coaching conversation.

Step 2. Coaching conversation: Book structure, flow, and outline (45 to 60 minutes)

Brainstorm a structure and approach that fits the reader benefit you identify. Make sure structure is a good fit for your writing style. Possibilities:

  • Topical (each chapter a topic related to a central point)

  • Chronological (each chapter moves the “story” forward in time)

  • Process (each chapter builds on the previous one to walk the reader through a process or sequence)

Your Homework: Follow up on identifying structure (if not fully identified during phone call). Then, list potential chapters, along with thesis statements for each chapter.

Homework evaluation and follow-up email or conversation.

Step 3. Coaching conversation: Sample chapter (45 to 60 minutes)

Will cover how to structure and pace a chapter and what elements needs to be in it. Follow-up will specifically identify what you do well, areas where you (or we as editors) will need to compensate, and a writing process that fits you well.

Your Homework: Write one of the chapters.

 Homework evaluation and follow-up.
