National Novel Writing Month

Well its November, so you writers out there know that means, and no, I am not referring to Thanksgiving, but National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo for short). This annual month-long writing challenge is one of the most popular and productive writing events in the world. It is a fantastic opportunity for writers of all skill and experience levels to put their determination to the test, and see if they can write a small novel, or 50,000 words, in 30 days.

And if you are worried it is too late to participate, it’s not! Even though the days are slowly slipping away, you can still sign up, declare a project, set goals, and get writing! If the 50,000 word goal feels unattainable, you can set a smaller personal goal, and get plugged in to the awesome community of writers who will help encourage and support you to hit your goals and create something new and wonderful!

The NaNoWriMo website has forums for all sorts of discussions as well as writing groups for critique and accountability.  You can find a group tailored to your experience level and genre, and all of you will learn and improve together as you cultivate your stories. Writers from all over the world participate every year, and NaNo gives you the option to group up with other writers from your region so you can have a more local support system, no matter where you are! If you prefer to bounce around between multiple projects, NaNo accommodates that as well! They allow you to announce multiple projects, and you can manage and track your progress for each one separately.

So, whether you have thought about trying your hand at a novel, or already completed several, you have nothing to lose by signing up and participating in this unique challenge, and entirely new worlds of your own creation to gain! Here is a list of bestselling novels written during NaNoWriMo, several of them by first time authors. Who knows, maybe next year your book will appear on this list!

Happy NaNoWriMo!
